2016 PLAN

CHAGAS DISEASE IN BRAZIL

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 1.2 million people were infected by Chagas in Brazil in 2015; also, the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (BSTM) reports more than 6,000 deaths each year for causes related to this condition. In 2006, Brazil was awarded the international certification for having interrupted the transmission of this vector-borne disease. However, during the last years there have been new outbreaks of severe Chagas cases spread by non-vector borne transmission: from mother to child during pregnancy, intake of contaminated food and some isolated cases of out-of-home vector transmission, especially in Amazônia Legal.

Doctors of the World outlined the following plan to fight Chagas disease in Brazil:

  • Target population: Chagas-affected urban population.
  • Geographical location: São Paulo.
  • Main Goal: To help increase population’s awareness, health education, promotion and protection as a prevention path against Chagas endemic disease in Brazilian adults and children.
  • Goal 1: To conduct a comprehensive prevention campaign of this vertically-transmitted infection and a Chagas-related health promotion campaign aimed at children and teenagers attending schools within the urban areas of the target locations in São Paulo.
  • Goal 2: To conduct a national prevention campaign focused on the vertically-transmitted infection (mother-to-child), re-introduction of the vector-borne disease and a health promotion campaign targeting Chagas together with key social players, such as the National Health Councils and the Public Health Ministries.
  • Goal 3: To make a surgery and implant automatic defibrillators from Boston Scientific on vulnerable, low-income and chronic patients with heart diseases caused by or associated with Chagas disease.

Doctors of the World outlined the following plan to fight Chagas disease in Colombia:

  • Target population: ethnic rural population.
  • Geographical location: Bogotá (national awareness campaign) and Santa Marta.
  • Main Goal: To help increase population’s awareness, health education, promotion and protection as a prevention path against Chagas endemic disease in Colombian adults and children.
  • Goal 1: To conduct a comprehensive prevention campaign and a Chagas-related health promotion campaign aimed at children and teenagers attending schools within the target locations detected in the country.
  • Goal 2: To conduct a national prevention campaign focused on the disease and a health promotion targeting Chagas together with key social players, such as the Colombia Institute of Health, Red Chagas and Health and Social Protection Ministries.

Doctors of the World outlined the following plan to fight Chagas disease in Mexico:

HOW TO PLAY

Monster Fix is a learning game where we need to help some lovely monsters get cured. Each monster will be characterized by a certain pathology. And, each pathology will be divided in two phases: a healing stage and a prevention stage.

To help monsters, two goals must be met: 1) Save the monster, and 2) Help him/her prevent his/her medical condition. Once goals are met, a brief moral will pop up with information about the corresponding pathology. You will find much more information in the microsite www.monsterfix.org.

You can download Monster Fix from Google Play and App Store.

You can also play it online (the demo version), via Facebook, at Monster Fix
